Thinning hair? Where to start, honestly

Hair loss is more common than you think, and the first steps matter. What a Master Stylist looks for before recommending anything.

Hair loss is more common than most people think, and it is nothing to be embarrassed about. Clients come in every week worried about thinning at the crown, a widening part, or edges that will not fill back in. Some of it is genetic, some is stress, some is tension from styling, and some is a health change worth talking to a doctor about. My job is to look at your hair honestly and tell you what I actually see.

If thinning hair is on your mind, here is where I would start.

First, notice the pattern

Thinning at the temples and edges often points to tension from tight styles over time. A widening part or thinning at the crown can be genetic or hormonal. Sudden shedding all over is usually stress, illness, or a recent change like a medication or a big life event. The pattern tells us a lot before we touch a single strand.

Rule out the fixable causes

Before anyone talks about extensions or wigs, we look at the simple things. Are your styles too tight? Is your scalp dry or inflamed? Are you brushing wet hair hard, or sleeping on cotton? Small changes here can slow shedding on their own. If I think something medical is going on, I will say so and suggest you see a doctor. I am a Master Stylist, not a physician, and I will never pretend otherwise.

Protective options that actually help

When hair needs cover and support while it recovers, there are good choices. Hair augmentation and installation can add fullness that blends with your own hair and stays secure and comfortable. A custom wig, cut and colored to look like your natural hair, gives you a full look with zero daily stress on your scalp. The right option depends on how much coverage you want and how your scalp is doing.

None of these are one-size-fits-all. In your appointment we look at your hair, your goals, and your budget, then pick the option that fits.

Care for the hair you have

Whatever route we take, the hair you keep still matters. Low-tension styles, a clean and moisturized scalp, a satin wrap at night, and gentle handling all give your hair its best chance. Growth takes time, and honest patience beats a quick promise every time.

What to expect at your first visit

Bring your questions and, if you have them, photos of your hair over the last year. We will look together, I will tell you what I see, and we will make a plan with no pressure. If the answer is a doctor first, that is what I will tell you.

Realities Phase II Salon offers color, cuts, braiding, hair augmentation and installation, and wig customizations in Altadena, in-shop and mobile, for all hair types and all ages. Book an appointment to talk through your options.
